This month we are spotlighting Gail D. who works in Springfield as an LPN. She has been an ADC team member for 11 years! We appreciate Gail because she is a true team player. She is always willing and ready to pick up additional shifts. Amazingly, in 11 years, Gail has never taken a sick day.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working at Austen-Dooley?
A: I like the closeness of our agency, the one on one. I’ve worked in nursing homes before, and in a nursing home, you may have three staff to 60 people. Being able to give the kind of care we can give because of the low nursing ratio, it means a lot. I can give better care and get to know our residents better. I do love our residents.
Q: What is one piece of advice for others in your profession?
A: It’s important to be able to work well with your coworkers and build a relationship with them. You need to have teamwork to take care of someone properly. Sometimes nurses coming from hospitals don’t have as much contact with DSP or nurse aides and haven’t had to build that relationship before. You have to treat all coworkers as equals.
Q: Who in your life inspires you and why?
A: My sister, Carol Beth. She is a retired business teacher and is always helping me with issues or putting things into perspective. She helps me focus better. She is one of the most important people in my life.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
A: I garden; I like flower gardens. I also have cats that I love taking care of. I enjoy decorating and crafting. I am usually the one at work doing a lot of the decorating for holidays. With help, I completely redid our home’s Christmas tree this past year, changing all the lights out and bringing in ornaments from home.
Q: What is something most people don’t know about you?
A: My dad was in the military. I grew up all over; we lived in Okinawa, Japan, for several years. I still remember being surrounded by the ocean. They had outdoor skating rinks there where my sisters and I would go; we had a seamstress that sewed us skating outfits.
